Second Life Library Blog

|

I stumbled on the Second Life Library 2.0 blog.  I still think this is an awesome idea.  Ok, so I already created my avatar...I couldn't resist!  I'm a recovering Simaholic...if you don't believe me, see previous post.

I have gone entire days playing Sims with no food.  I probably have spent 14 hours obsessing over a house...although now I'm pretty darn good at houses and I can throw up a pretty decent one in about 30 minutes.  I have also accidentally caught myself on fire.  I remember one time in the original Sims when I caught my house on fire so bad that I burnt up the stairs...my Sim couldn't get off the second floor...the rubble was making it impossible to put in another set of stairs.  My other Sim was away at work and maid was not cleaning things up fast enough to save my other Sim's life (literally!)  It was a horrible mess.  Of course now I'm so good at the game that I'm usually causing fires on purpose just to spice things up a little for my Sims.

I'm rambling right now because I'm bored.  We just got done watching a movie and Alex started playing his game again...all this Sims talk makes me want to play but it's too late now.  Well...I could play Second Life instead :)

Short, Sweet, to the Point

|

Wired has a brief article called, The Culture War, outlining all of the "horrible" things that have degraded the moral compass of our so-called culture...

US senator Charles Schumer says some videogames aimed at kids "desensitize them to death and destruction." But dire pronouncements about new forms of entertainment are old hat. It goes like this: Young people embrace an activity. Adults condemn it. The kids grow up, no better or worse than their elders, and the moral panic subsides. Then the whole cycle starts over.

Hey people, how about instead of condemning video games, why not play them with your kids?  Take an interest, will you?

Does information need architects?

|

Since I've left my former job for a friendlier and less-stressful job in library land, I don't read the swarm of usability and information architecture literature I used to read.  My eye caught this article on KMWorld.com though.

Does information need architects?

Yes, yes, yes, hell yes it does!

It's a great article, with a great sense of what IA is and how IAs are viewing themselves (or how they're not).

What information architects do is actually pretty straightforward. Gene Smith, a noted information architect who doesn't call himself an information architect, began one session by stating (approximately) that information architects structure shared information spaces. Their oft-cited prototype of a well-architected information space is Amazon.com: Not only can you easily navigate to what you want, you can find what you didn't know you wanted. It's also clear what information architecture is distinct from: It isn't Web site design and layout, which should instantiate the design laid out by the information architects. And it's not traditional library science, which has focused on the rational organization of information more than on our electronic interaction with it.

This is quite an accurate description of how I worked and how I viewed being an IA.  I loved being an IA (and I still do) because I actually felt like I was solving problems in creative ways.  I was using what I knew about web design or information science and applying that new ways, but I certainly didn't feel like a web designer.  I couldn't design my way out of a paper box if I had to...architect on the other hand...

IA is a gray area world for me.  I look at it like a cousin to librarianship, and it's unfortunate that their paths don't cross very often too.  Reading this piece, however, made me realize that the perceived problems in IA and librarianship are not that much different from one another...the only difference is that traditional librarianship has been around a lot longer than IA has.  IAs come in many shapes, sizes, and experiences.  I certainly know which one of these I am:

the dividing line among information architects is real. One group tends more toward control and using expertise to create a structure that should work the same way for every user. The other tends more toward flexibility and enabling user interaction to determine the structure of the site and the content of the answers.

I'm the second for sure, I think user interaction and content should direct every project.  I wonder if we can track these groups into the type of background an IA has though...

In part it's because the constituency of information architects is diverse. Some come out of library science. Others come out of anthropology and sociology. And others have a webbier background...

So now that I'm not technically an IA anymore, do I still call myself one?  The answer is yes, mostly because I still feel like one...I think it's in my blood actually.  I've given some thought as to whether I would like to go back into doing the job again and the answer here is yes and no.  The more I work in the library the less I want to go into a corporate environment, however the more I work in the library the more I realize that libraries need IAs too!  It seems a bit ironic to me actually, but when I look at so many library websites I think to myself, "I would do this, this, and this differently".  Then I think to myself, "how can a job that was created by librarians not be utilized by librarians?!"  I think a lot of libraries undervalue and underappreciate their websites and this is a huge mistake in my mind.  A library's greatest asset in our technological future will be their website, it's not just about the design but also the organization.  Image if you were to walk into any branch library where the librarians just randomly put books away on the shelf in no particular order...you wouldn't do that to your collection, so why would you do that to your website?

Music Tools and Sidebar

|

I should be studying right now...ha!  I'm so horrible.  I think in about an hour I'm going to go work out and then I might be motivated to study the rest of the evening.  My husband is still in California so my only distraction is the internet...

Instead of studying I'm playing with music things.  I've been interested in a few music services for some time.  I know I've posted about them, but I think that was before I moved to MT and I can't figure out how to import my many years of old posts (grrr).

I mentioned before that all of the music services are different so it's hard for me to actually choose one, well now I have 3 plugins on my iTunes (yeesh).

Mentioned in ALA Techsource

| | Comments (6)

Wow, I should prepare myself for the swarm of traffic I'll be getting to my site, thanks to the new post in ALA Techsource, On the 2.0 Job Description (Part 2): LIS Students in a 2.0 World.  It was a pleasant surprise to be mentioned there and I welcome anybody who has clicked over from the post.  I sent an email to Michael Stephens when he asked for input from current LIS students about whether current MLIS curriculum is up to par with what we'll need for Library 2.0.  Well, you can read my email on ALA Techsource, but my experience with Wayne State is absolutely positive.  Not just on the curriculum level, I do feel that I entered the program at Wayne State at exactly the right time for what I want to do with Library and Information Science, but also with how "user friendly" the whole program is.

I had my heart set on going to University of Michigan several years ago, but several years ago I was working in a very corporate atmosphere.  Instead of reading library blogs I was reading web design and usability blogs (ok and a few library blogs mixed in), it's not that Michigan would have been the wrong choice, I just know that my sanity thanks me for choosing WSU.  The biggest relief for me has been how easy it is to work a part time job and get some classes in.  I'm not in a hurry to get my degree and I'm satisfied at my job, but the fact that I can go to school, work, and still have a life outside of both of those is a big deal to me.  I think that was one of the major mental road blocks to committing to Michigan as my grad school choice, I knew that no matter what, school would be my life.  My personal school to work ratio requires that I'm working more.  My personal life to work to school ratio requires that I'm enjoying myself in the process, if the balance gets off kilter just a little bit then I feel inclined to make changes...so far these changes have not been necessary since starting school.  My husband does go to Michigan and he loves it.  I can't knock the school either because over 50% of our income comes from U of M ;)  Although I think another part of me is relieved I didn't go there...that would be the OSU fan in me...yes I'm a Buckeye living in Ann Arbor, please forgive me...

I'm happy that Michael stressed one particular thing about my email though:

What strikes me most about her response is that she cites the most valuable experience is "from actually doing these things."

I don't think you can participate in Library or Web 2.0 without actually getting your hands dirty with this stuff.  The name of the 2.0 game is participation.  I know on some subconscious level I realized this years ago when I was blogging or trying out new services, but all of that playing around has paid off for me today.  The whole purpose of my blog is to play!  I don't have a whole lot to say to the world but I do have a lot of ideas and observations that need to come out somewhere.  Just the fact that several months ago I was not using wikis and now I've already installed two on my own site and I'm using others gives me a huge feeling of accomplishment.

I did enjoy reading the other emails and contributions in the ALA Techsource post.  I recently started tinkering with my MySpace page again.  I don't visit it very much, when I first visited it I got email from a lot of weirdos that I ignored, but now I'm actually getting messages from people I used to go to high school with...I kinda think that's cool.  I've even found that a lot of people that I already know from college have pages on MySpace.  What this has put into perspective for me is that real people are using these things!  People I already know, people in our own communities or people that we can go out and network with.  My former co-worker used to refer to her offline life as her "real life", but I don't think you can do that anymore.  Online or offline, we're talking to the same people and the boundaries are fading away fast.  What a wonderful thing that is :)

Library 2.0 Innovation Bootcamp Blog

|

I've been checking out the Library 2.0 Innovation Bootcamp Blog, the site is super cool, but what I really wanted to comment on was the banner header on the blog...now that is super super cool!  It's the little things that please me :)

Ok, now I'm taking a deeper look at the site...it looks like it's done in Blogware...where I had my old blog before I switched to MT...no wonder why it looks great!

Lonely Day

| | Comments (2)

The best song on the radio right now has to be System of a Down, "Lonely Day".  I think I can listen to this song over and over and over and over.

We were listening to the radio at work on Saturday and it reminded me that I should request the CD, we didn't have it at work but AADL had it.  It came in yesterday and I have to go pick it up today...well today when I was cleaning up my computer I found out I already had it on there.  Oh well :)  It's a good CD I don't mind checking it out again.

Keeping my computer tidy is a task anymore.  I deleted about 2 gigs of music...I still have about 3 on there.  I'm thinking about deleting a bunch of pictures too, I have a pro account on Flickr so I could essentially put all my pictures online.  If I delete them from my hard drive though, I would have to trust that nothing happens to the pictures on Flickr...I do but still, that's a lot of pictures...

Well, I haven't been posting much because I've been busy.  I have my final this week and I should be studying right now (I have until Saturday to take it online...I'm pretty positive I'm taking it Saturday).  Ok, I'm not much worried about my final, even if I get a 50 on it, I'll still get an A in the class.  I'm not striving for a 50, mind you, but I'm not freaking out over it either.

Next week I'll be on vacation, not sure if I'll be online either.  From what I can tell there are no wireless hotspots near my mom's place in Indiana.  Well, that's not exactly true, I know there's one at the campground directly next to my mom's place, but I haven't checked to see if I'm able to access it as a non-camper, or if I could even access it from my mom's (kinda doubt the signal reaches that far).  The campground shares the same lake as my mom's park...I did have the crazy idea of taking the boat over to the campground side with my computer to see if it works...but then again I'm not really sure if I want to be taking my computer out on the lake either...I would just die if anything happened to it...plus I only have a two minute battery life on "The Beast".  Living without internet for a week though is rough for Alex and I, even when we went camping last fall we were relieved to spend one night in a hotel with wireless access.  Of course my mom was constantly rolling her eyes at us every time we got out our computers...hey, we can't help it that one of our favorite camping activities is watching DVDs in our tent!  :)

Not sure what we'll do while we're in Indiana, we'll have free reign of my mom's place the entire week.  Probably grill out, sit by the fire, drink some beers, make some margaritas...I haven't played Sims in a long time, maybe I'll bring my game.  We could go into town to watch a movie if there's anything good playing.  The flea market at Shipshewana is opening next week too so we might take a side trip over there for a day.  I'm sure we'll find plenty to do, but the whole point of the week is to relax, and we're pretty good at that!

New Library Opens in Second Life

|

Somebody mentioned this in one of our sessions at Library Camp, but I just noticed that ALA TechSource posted a blog article on a new library opening in the online game, Second Life.

What an awesome idea!  The library coordinators will even offer library programming for Second Life residents.

I haven't played the game, I'm a Sims addict so I know if I were to start playing there would be no turning back.  I haven't had time to play Sims lately (which does make me sad), I'm not sure if I'm prepared for an online Sims replacement at the moment.

Mackenzie & Friends

I guess this was the first year Alex and I actually hosted a holiday event at our place. I think things went well, we had about 75% of the Hansen family there. I'll be in Indiana next weekend celebrating with my mom, brother, and nephew (Alex is going to a conference in California and my sister has to work).

I'd like to get some Library Camp notes up on this blog but I'm working on getting them up on our committee wiki first. I'll have to modify them some for the blog so I don't know how much time this will take me.

Today Sarah should be coming over so we can finish our presentation for Thursday (crossing fingers that we can get it done!)

Library Camp - Lunch Conversation

Ooh hey! Here's a picture of me eating lunch with a group of people from Library Camp...

What a wonderful experience and a great day all around. Even after Library Camp was over the day kept getting better...I'll certainly write more about it later. Today is going to be another one of those days. We have to get ready for my in-laws to come for Easter, I have to do some more grocery shopping, and I'm thinking we're going to go back downtown today with my in-laws. It's supposed to be a nice day so we'll probably go wandering down Main St. and Kerrytown again.

Outdoor Office

Originally uploaded by heidigoseek.

I've been waiting all winter for days like today!

I didn't have class this morning but I did meet with Sarah to start getting things together for our class presentation next week. On my way back from the library where she works (which is where we agreed to meet) I was so thrilled that I didn't have to be anywhere else today. I had my windows open, turned the radio up loud, and I was thinking about summer all the way home. When I got home I immediately went to the patio and got my computer out. You have no idea how much I love wireless internet...no idea at all.

The only downside is the video I've been watching for class pretty much all day, it's boring the living daylights out of me. I don't want to gripe about my class assignment because I actually enjoy my class, but this particular video has sucked all creative energy I had earlier this week completely dry. The video is about the ILS at school, which I think would normaly interest me, but this presentation of it isn't doing much for me. The concepts aren't that hard to understand, while I know I'm "learning" things, I don't feel like I'm learning anything that I couldn't get by just playing around for some time on my own. The actual "cool things" mentioned in the video aren't even new concepts for me, I've already knew they existed or that they could exist so it's hard to get excited about that too. The video is a bit technical too, not so technical that I can't understand but technical enough that my brain is turning the information off...I just want the gist of it, that's all I need to understand, when I want to know more my brain turns itself back on. Unfortunately I'm only 3/4 of my way through the whole presentation (it's 3 hours long!). I'm taking a mental breather so I can work up the energy to finish it off.

I have a feeling that tomorrow all of my creative energy will come back...I'll be attending Libary Camp at AADL! I am absolutely excited about the entire experience too. I love the idea of loose and informal interaction and I'm excited about the wide variety of people that will be in attendance. I think I'll also literally be "camped out" at AADL. Last week when I was on the website (either trying to renew my books or see how many millions of dollars I owe in a library fine), I saw that they were doing a retro game night! Alex and I usually losers on a Friday night so I want to go down there and check it out. What I love is that the tournament is for kids and adults (oh yeah, and it's at the library).

Mental drain headache seems to be going away but I still don't know if I have the energy to finish watching the video...I think what might help is a beer...almost dinner time now...I'm thinking chicken on the grill...

A fun quiz from Librarian Avengers.

Am I Geeky enough to be a Librarian?
Yes No
1. I enjoy acronyms.   x
2. I own a cat.   x
3. When confronted with a pile of books I think “Hmm…first I would sort by author, then by title.” x

4. I am obsessive enough to appreciate the difference between 345.065 and 345.605. x

5. I possess a useless undergraduate degree. x

6. Being surrounded by books makes me lather with delight. x

7. The idea of someone preventing me from reading Orwell because they don’t like it strikes me as…Orwellian. x

8. I am comfortable with the Internets. x

9. If my house caught on fire, one of the things I would grab is my favorite book.   x
10. I possess a useless graduate degree.   x
11. I can daisy-chain a herd of Ubuntu boxes faster than you can say FreeBSD   x
12. These kids today. I swear. If they would just read a damn book once in awhile, they wouldn't be blowing each other up so much. x

13. I could find out the middle name of your high school boyfriend with just ten minutes on the Internet. x

14. I could find out the first line of A Tale of Two Cities with just ten seconds on the Internet. x

15. I know the first line of A Tale of Two Cities.   x
16. I am a disenfranchised intellectual.   x
17. The idea of arming the public with knowledge appeals to me more than, say, arming them with pitchforks and torches. x

18. I would rather do something cool than get rich. x

19. I possess a useless doctoral degree.   x
20. I can say “Colon classification” without laughing.   x

Scoring Under 5 = I think the “We hate libraries” meeting is down the hall.

5-10 = You are geeky, but can you HANDLE the acronyms?

10-15 = I’ve got some library school applications under my desk you big dork

15-20 = Quit your job immediately! Grab the nearest child and teach him to read! Oh, and start stocking up on acid-free paper.

I scored a 11, I guess I'm middle ground, that's where I like to be anyway!  By the way, if my house caught on fire, the first thing I'd probably try to save is myself or my husband if he was in mortal danger, then I'd probably save my computer next.  I could never be a true librarian geek because we'll never own a cat, we're dog people.  I can handle acronyms but they don't necessarily bring me joy or excitement, they're just acronyms.

Wikipedia Meme

|

This wikipedia thing is going around, thought I'd contribute:

Go to Wikipedia and look up your birth day (excluding the year). List three facts, two births and one death in your blog, including the year.

Events on my birthday (September 17)

Births (other than me of course!)

Death

Oh my gosh, I actually learned something from this!  Hildegard von Bingen died on my birthday!  After music history this will be a name that is forever burned in my brain and this is the only reason that is significant to me...I already knew about Hank Williams and John Ritter sharing a birthday with me.  I think I knew about the Constitution thing too.  I was aware of the Jim Morrison incident but not necessarily that it happened on my on that day.  A fun fact about the Nation Football League is I've visited the National Football Hall of Fame in Canton, even for a non-football fan it was a pretty neat place to go.

Spring Table

Spring Table

Originally uploaded by heidigoseek.

Ok, we had dinner guests the other night and this is the kind of silly stuff I do before they get to our apartment...I take pictures of my table. Normal people would actually take pictures of the people they're with but I always forget such things once company actually arrives...plus I just feel silly sometimes getting the camera out all the time.

The flowers are from Trader Joe's, and ironically, a week later, they're still somewhat alive! This must be a new record for me.

The dishes are new too, I wanted something a little more brighter and springier than what I had. We went to Dollar Tree and got a whole new set (plates, cups, bowls, placemats, and towels) all for something like $20. I think I'm really like my mom in this respect, I'll set my table for just about every season, the only problem is I'm running out of room for dishes...

Opening Night!

Guys & Dolls - SHS Cast

Originally uploaded by heidigoseek.

I took some pictures from rehearsal the other night, though I did them on my phone so most didn't come out great.

Anyway, tonight is opening night for Guys & Dolls! I'm really enjoying this show too, even if I don't play much. Actually, there's a giant curtain around the pit so I can actually get away with reading while I'm not playing, which is pretty much most of the entire second act.

I'm still playing with my camera pictures, with this set of images I was trying to mess around with the exposure but the spotlight was still too bright in most cases. I haven't tried zooming in (which this camera supposedly does), because I'm usually frightened by the quality of digital zoom, although I'm not really concerned with quality with any of these phone images. I'm mostly just messing around with different ways to work with the technology itself. I have the upload email address programmed right in my phone so after I take the images I can have them sent to my Flickr account almost immediately...I find that cooler than anything!

It really is the technology that I'm most interested in. I consider that even though the quality of these images aren't good now, I think of the next phone I buy, or the next, and I realize the possibilities of what we would be able to do with this kind of mobile technology. I can auto post to Flickr and even though I haven't figure out how to do it yet, I could even auto blog, without even being at my computer. Eventually the technology will make it easier for us to type on keypads (or we'll just be used to it by then), or maybe instead of typing we're doing podcasts straight from our phones to our blogs. The possibilities are pretty much endless...but cool!

MapQuest Steps Up

| | Comments (2)

Looks like MapQuest is trying to get back on top, I'm sure they've suffered a huge blow with Google and Yahoo! competing for their business.  MapQuest used to be my first choice for maps, that is until Google came around with their service.  I go back and forth between Google and Yahoo! but I haven't given MapQuest much of a thought lately, until today, that is.

Here is a list of features that MapQuest is offering, and let me tell you, a few of these I've been waiting around for a long time for somebody to finally give them to me!

Shortest Time
MapQuest factors in dozens of variables to generate the most efficient route based on the expected trip time. This is the "classic" MapQuest route, recommended for most trips.

Shortest Distance
This new option provides the shortest distance route. Great for finding new ways across town - or try it along with Avoid Highways to plan your next bike ride!

Avoid Highways
Freeways make you nervous? Like exploring the back roads? Try our Avoid Highways option.

Avoid Tolls
Hate waiting at toll booths? Want to save a few bucks? Avoid Tolls was designed for you!

I've been looking for a mapping service that allows me to customize routes based on roads I want to take.  I know I can get to Angola, Indiana using I-94 and I-69 but we live off of US-12 and don't mind taking that route instead.  We also skip I-94 when going to Illinois and take the US-12 route to I-69.  Now if I needed to give directions using US-12 instead of the interstate I can plan a route that avoids the interstate for friends or family based on specific preferences.

I hate tolls!  I don't think we should have to pay to use a road and use them very infrequently.  My only exception is the Chicago Skyway, that is $2.00 (or maybe more now) that is absolutely worth the cost.  I purposely took back roads from Ohio to Wisconsin while I was in college to avoid having to use the Ohio or Indiana Toll Roads.  My route saved me money in gas and didn't add much to time, if ever I get a change to effectively avoid toll roads, I will always take that chance.  Besides you miss a lot driving around on the interstate all the time, you get to see things you wouldn't otherwise see and you get to inadvertently discover new places you never knew existed.  It's the closest I get to an adventurous spirit.

These new MapQuest services may just be enough to bring me back to the service.  I have all summer as a road warrior to try them out too!

HigherEd BlogCon 2006

| | Comments (1)
From blyberg.net I noticed an entry for the HigherEd BlogCon a web based event focused on new technology resources in higher education.  It caught my attention though because there is a week devoted to Library & Information Resources, starting April 10, 2006.  Of course not only iteresting but Sarah and I might find some useful bits of information to include in our presentation.  I'm quite certain that our presentation is the week after this....  Regardless there seem to be a few interesting presentations I wouldn't mind catching just out of pure interest.

My WSU Site Revisited

| | Comments (4)

I got my grade back on my website for my class and I got an A on it.  I decided to completely redo it though, my professor gave us a link for the Open Source Web Design site in class last week, I took a look around and really liked a lot of the designs so I picked one for that site instead of recreating my original in CSS.  It only took me an hour and a half last night to get everything into the new design, I did it after our dinner company left and Alex started playing his computer game.

I did a sort of archive of my original site in the Coursework section of my site though, since it does reflect the actual project.  The final product is up and I'm actually looking forward to adding projects for other classes on there.  My next project for the class I get to work together with Sarah!  For the PowerPoint portion of the class we get to team up and do a 10 minutes presentation.  Sarah and I met on Friday to decide what we'd do our presentation on, the hardest part for us will actually be trying to talk about library technology in under 10 minutes!

I also have to think about presenting something on Access to our class on Thursday this week.  I have musical rehearsal all this week so I'm only working one day at the library.  I have some things to do at home both for my boss and something else I can help the technology department with.  It's going to be a busy week though, I'm just happy that I don't have to drive back and forth to Monroe and then to Ohio for rehearsal every single day, I wouldn't like that at all.  I also talked to my dad yesterday and I realize that I don't visit my family as much as I should, I should try to visit with them sometime this week if I can, since I will be in Ohio every day this week.

Happy National Library Week!

A group of library students at University of Pittsburgh produced this movie called Rock and Roll Library.  Seems like a good thing to post to celebrate National Library Week, starting tomorrow.  Plus I never posted anything from YouTube yet, seemed like a fun test.
