Good 'bye MySpace

I cancelled my MySpace account just now. The comment spam has been driving me nuts, not just in my name but I've been getting the same sort of thing from some of my friends. Today I changed my spam settings and it happened again so I'm done. I don't really do much on MySpace, I'm not sad to see it go either. Sorry if any one of you were my friends on there, but if you really want to keep track of what I'm doing, feel free to add me on Facebook instead.

That's weird. I can't say I've had any comment spam on MySpace... very few comments at all, in fact. I mainly use it as a place to find music now, and the majority of the "friends" I have over there are bands who I want to follow from an events and music releases perspective... I've had a couple recently who have friended me on the basis that I was connected to another artist that is similar to them, and I discovered some nice new music as a result. Frankly though, I've always found MySpace ugly, kiddish, hard to customise, and not particularly useful.

The spam is happening on my wall and at the same time on all of my friends' walls, all in my name. I will get the same sort of thing in the opposite direction where I would get friends posting to my wall who actually didn't post anything themselves. It's really an inconvenience for everybody, after this last one my husband deleted his account too.

What really upset me was that I changed my spam settings so friends had to do the Captcha to comment and it still happened.

I'm glad that you've been able to find some use out of MySpace with finding new music. I never really got into that aspect of MySpace myself.

I've never been a fan of the design either. I know that they're moving to the application arena like Facebook but I can't even get a simple default page to fit within their window, any extra thing I add usually makes the whole profile look horrible. While Facebook's design really isn't all the exciting either, at least things fit in the window like they're supposed to.

I don't know if you noticed this TechCrunch article, I thought it was interesting I read it right after I deleted my account.

Ewww. That must have been upsetting, so I can understand why you wanted out.

Completely agree that the design of MySpace has sucked forever... having pages too wide for the browser window is just stupid and annoying.

Again, I think I'd highlight the difference between the sites - MySpace has the music aspect, and appeals more to youngsters; Facebook is a little more serious and doesn't currently have the same types of community / filesharing aspects.

I hasten to add that I've never been "in" to MySpace... it's an extremely occasional thing for me.

Actually I attended a very interesting panel on social networking at the conference I just came back from. Both sites have very different histories (which I already already aware of but less familiar with Facebook's), one thing I found most interesting is that some teens see moving from MySpace to Facebook as a rite of passage and they don't think twice about also maintaining their MySpace profile when they enter college.

The design of MySpace was always a huge turnoff for the site for me so I think because of that I never really got into it myself.
